Thunderbolt is located 5 miles southeast offshore of Marathon.This wreck site contains an intentionally sunk 188 foot military ship that sits upright in 115 feet of water. Originally known as the USS Randolph, this ship was built as a cable laying ship, she later served as a research ship to study lightening, which is why it became known as Thunderbolt. Coated with colorful sponge , coral and hydroid , it provides food and refuge to angel fish and jacks and other deep water fish. You will want to take a look at the large props and the engine compartment beneath the deck. It is possible to descend into the hull to 110’.
